A largely sustainable shoe from Veja
A shoe for those who place sustainability seriously. One day, all shoes will be eco-friendly but now, the Veja might be the best of the bunch.
With this shoe it’s important to look at the brand first and foremost in order to understand their ethos. It’s the brand's honesty that is very impressive and the fact they don’t hide behind figures about future production, more so they state how they produce their shoes now.
They recognise that too many shoes are made from petroleum-based materials and are addressing that with the use of plant-based components and sustainable rubber sources.
This is an update their Condor model and aims to become a daily trainer for those seeking a more sustainable running shoe solution.
The brand accept it’s not a performance product and clearly don’t aim it at elite athletes, but it’s a refreshingly honest approach and should be welcomed by the industry.
The midsole cushioning is a little firm riding, but durability should be excellent, the brand say perhaps double a ‘regular shoe’. After my 50 miles on the road the shoe is showing little to no signs of wear! It uses a predominantly sugar cane-based construction, like the outsole which utilises natural latex from a sustainable source.
The mesh upper is made entirely from 100% recycled plastic bottles, not partially, 100%. It’s a simply design and to be honest is absolutely fine. The design mirrors the simply no-nonsense look of most of the brands model, so don’t expect wacky styling here.
Diamond patterned rubber outsole with flex groves.
For those with an eye on sustainability it is perhaps the best option on the market today from any brand.
