This top of the range model from Under Armour offers premium levels of cushioning as well and high-tech connectivity.
The shoe sits above the highly rated Sonic 3 model and so much better than earlier HOVR models such as the Phantom we tested a while back.
The shoe uses the brand’s HOVR cushioning, a foam that provides high levels or energy return. It works; the shoe feels super soft and super smooth that compares very favourably to other premium price competitors. It’s a stable, neutral shoe and we found even mild over-pronators were held steady reasonably well. There’s a Pebax plate incorporated into the midsole, but in this shoe it extends only marginally into the forefoot. It does provide somewhat of an increased push-off but we feel it works better to keep the softer foam cushioning stable.
The upper is thick and padded for a soft, plush feel around the foot and holds the foot well.
Carbon Rubber Pods in the heel deliver greater traction and durability, while solid rubber in high impact zones benefits durability while reducing weight.
The connected element of the shoe comes from a sensor embedded in the shoe's midsole. This connects to the UA MapMyRun app to track details of stride length, frequency and speed. It’s very technical and the brand is promising to make further updates to the app in order to provide even more in-depth reporting on each training session.
HOVR Cushioning System includes a soft UA HOVR foam combined with a dynamic mesh Energy Web creates a balance of cushioning and responsiveness.
Pebax Speed Plate is inspired by sprint spikes for increased energy returns and more powerful push-offs.
Embedded Sensor connects to MAPMYRUN and tracks, analyzes, and stores detailed running metrics to inform ways to improve performance.
Carbon Rubber Pods in the heel deliver greater traction and durability.
Solid Rubber in high impact zones for greater durability and reduced weight.
Engineered Mesh Upper is extremely lightweight and breathable for ultimate speed.
External Heel Counter for added stability and a locked-in feel.
Reflective details help you to be seen in low light conditions.
