Our verdict

We’d recommend this shoe. It is light enough to enjoy on a daily basis - the package of cushioning, upper support and weight makes this a versatile one if you feel like picking the pace up at any stage but if you don’t, it’ll look after you throughout your weekly mileage.

  • Possibly too narrow for very wide feet.

First impressions

The Ride 9 is almost certainly Saucony’s best-selling neutral running shoe and continues the long running (excuse the pun) Ride series line. It is a well cushioned every day training shoe, designed for road running. If you’ve been a fan of the Ride series, you won’t be disappointed with Saucony stating that it’ll deliver more energy return than ever before.

Midsole

The EVERRUN addition to the Ride series has made the cushioning better and more responsive. As featured in other models, the Ride 9 features a topsole layer of the EVERUN material which Saucony claim ‘has an 83% energy return rate’ giving you a spring to your stride and as the material, it’s claimed by Saucony, ‘doesn’t break down’, it’ll make the cushioning highly resilient. The layer sits on a big fat wedge of EVA with an additional crash pad in the heel.

Transition through the running motion from heel landing to toe-off was also responsive and the foot felt well protected under the forefoot.

There is an 8mm drop between heel and forefoot (27mm to 19mm) which will stop the calf muscles working too hard over the longer distance.

We feel this shoe rides well but like other shoes containing EVERRUN, don’t expect a big pillow of a shoe. It is firmish and firmer than the previous model.

Upper

Saucony quality, diamond mesh upper with their FlexFilm treatment throughout the upper offers a lightweight, flexible fit and reduces the chance of blisters. The FlexFilm reinforces the upper without the need for additional overlays and stitching.

A good looking upper offers a reasonable amount of reflectivity for night safety, the mesh will offer a very good degree of breathability. The padded ankle collar means that the shoe is very comfortable at the heel and is lined, as is the tongue, in Saucony’s Rundry material.

The toe box looks a little pointy, but we found that there was enough room in the toe box for the average foot.

Sole

Saucony call the configuration of their sole layout, Tri-Flex and is a mixture of blown rubber for lightweight comfort and carbon rubber in high use areas for durability. The layout is meant to improve ground contact at toe off. They felt fine and will give you enough grip on road and tracks.

Conclusion

The inclusion of the EVERUN material in the Ride 9 improves this shoe over the Ride 8. It makes it an exceptionally well cushioned neutral running shoe that, given the FlexFilm upper additions, EVERUN midsole feature and carbon rubber outsole elements, should make this shoe a durable one.

We’d recommend this shoe. It is light enough to enjoy on a daily basis - the package of cushioning, upper support and weight makes this a versatile one if you feel like picking the pace up at any stage but if you don’t, it’ll look after you throughout your weekly mileage.

There’s tough competition in this sector and at this price point but the Ride 9 will hold its own.
