Our verdict

A solid trail running shoe that is packed with technology but creeping away from its roots as a mid tier, affordable trail shoe, to a more premium product packed with tech. Everything that you need from a trail shoe, and well thought through new additions such as a nice new lacing system.

  • Positive
  • Great grip as expected with the Peregrine line
  • Simple, but effective off road upper
  • Decent cushioning for a mid tier trail shoe
  • Negative
  • The teeth on the outsole did catch my skin when I was on unstable ground

First impressions

I have been a fan of this off road line for some years now, and the latest update has some nice new additions and still fits and feels like a Peregrine should. The new upper performs well, and is pretty breathable. The midsole with Everun top layer gives more than enough cushioning to take you from door to trail, and handle the asphalt when needed. The outsole is excellent and grip is super as always, but I just wish the edge of the outsole wasn’t so aggressive – I will explain why later.

Midsole

An Everun layer of responsive foam close to the foot is a common, almost standard technology for Saucony these days, and in the Peregrine 8 it again delivers a smooth, comfortable and responsive ride. The EVA was soft enough to deliver good cushioning but it protected against stones and rocks poking through and causing rock bruising very well. The Peregrine 8 has an offset of 4mm so you are pretty low to the ground hence its responsive on uneven ground, and feels pretty stable in most conditions.

Upper

A tight air mesh is breathable enough to enjoy a spring / summer off road run, which is when I tend to run off road more. The mesh is tight enough to keep out any debris, and is very permeable. If you go in water, it will come in the shoe and get your feet wet, but it also easily drains out. That is part of the fun thought right, getting down and dirty on the trails!

The lacing system as an ISO inspired floating eyelet system that let me tie to shoe snugly without causing any pressure points and the padding is sufficient without acting like a sponge on the wet, sloppy runs.

Sole

Toothy 6mm lugs give you more than enough traction from light to reasonably muddy trails without being too aggressive. They are multi-directional so work equally well up and down hill, but it’s a pretty busy outsole with lots of lugs, so in softer, sticky mud they did clog up and stay clogged. That said on the road the outsole was fine, unlike many trail shoes I wear that run like ice skates due to the limited ground contact. The teeth running around the perimeter of the outsole giving an aggressive look, which looks great, but when I went on uneven ground, and ran on unstable ground I did catch the heel medial side lugs on my legs causing some irritation.

Conclusion

You know what your going to get with the Peregrine 8 if you have worn previous versions. A dependable, solid and comfortable trail shoe. The price is creeping up due to the increase in technology generation on generation but overall the update is a good one, and if you’re a fan, then this wont disappoint. Not for the extreme trail, but day to day trail runners will enjoy the cushioning and protection the shoe offers.
