First impressions

If you loved the Saucony Mirage, your prayers have been answered. The Saucony Liberty ISO has a walloping fast ride, a low 4mm drop for a snappy ride and built with a lightweight upper that fits superbly. It has excellent cushioning via an EverRun midsole and is very responsive at pace.

If you want a lightweight trainer or a versatile racing shoe, this shoe would be very hard to resist if you can save up this much money for what is mostly a second shoe in the wardrobe. The Liberty ISO also recently won the Best Debut shoe in the Runner's World shoe awards.

The midsole is a full EverRun construction, and only the second shoe that Saucony has put out that offers this the full length of the midsole. This is where the cost of the shoe can be slightly justified, as the BASF material is extremely expensive at source compared to traditional CMEVA.

The shock absorption and energy return are superb for a faster shoe, and the EverRun is a truly credible technology. Combined, the shoe is extremely responsive and very comfortable straight out of the box, with no breaking in needed at all.

The medial post is relatively small, but offers more than enough support when running quicker, but I would be careful if you are doing slower runs.

The Saucony Liberty ISO is a mono tongue construction, so a sock like fit, with an ISO from upper laid over the top. This construction is my favourite out of all the brands on the market right now, and the ‘floating fingers’ in the quarters move individually delivering a very supportive, but extremely comfortable fit. The no sew overlays are thin enough, and placed in such a way that you really don’t notice them, so the overall combination is delivers a great upper all round.

The Saucony Liberty ISO outsole is great. A translucent rubber, which is sticky on the road gives excellent grip, and for such a lightweight shoe, it has got a lot of it. Making this a pretty hard-wearing shoe so far.

I did most of my Fartlek, and tempo runs in this shoe over the past month, plus a Half Marathon and they have been great – I cannot fault them to be honest.

Fast and light, with oodles of cushioning, the Saucony Liberty ISO is a very versatile shoe, and a great option to own. If I am anything to go by, you will end up picking out this shoe for a multitude of run types, which I would say is a very good sign that someone has made a great shoe. Yes, it’s expensive, but its packed with premium technology, so its justified – maybe!
