A shoe that perfectly fits the bill for a runner looking for a fast road or even track workout; cushioned, responsive and not too bad when it comes to support.

Our verdict

The Kinvara 8 is a smooth-riding, well-cushioned training shoe that is stable yet light. We loved the Kinvara 7 and we love this new version so it comes highly recommended.

First impressions

The Saucony Kinvara 8 is a natural daily trainer and performance uptempo running shoe designed for a neutral foot motion. This shoe shouts marathon thanks to its cushioning and light weight. They feel like they can handle long runs and a bit of everyday action but at the drop of a hat you could turn them into your racing favourites.

It is slightly heavier than the Kinvara 7. The Kinvara 8 has the addition of a full-length Everun top sole and it feels a smoother than the Kinvara 7. The upper is new and seems to be an improvement in terms of breathability.

Midsole

For fans of the 7 - of which we are - there’s been a move on in terms of the already soft cushioning and Saucony have added full-length EVERUN topsole for more energy return and stripped down its upper for a more comfortable form fit. Certainly it feels as responsive and able to cope with road and track pretty comfortably. Often softer light shoes can feel a little too forgiving and not return the kind of response neeed, but we’ve run track sessions in these as well as short, pace road races and can report there appears to be plenty.

Upper

The internal strap system keeps your foot nicely in place - at least burning those 200s on the track in them didn’t have us falling out of them! And the lightweight FLEXFILM overlays provide structure and support. The 7 certainly had its fans and the 8 looks to have added just one or two extra bits to make sure those fans aren’t upset. It all operates off a 4mm drop which is low, but such is the cushioning and support you don’t really feel that.

Sole

It’s all about flexibility for this shoe and the outsole offers plenty of that. We haven’t managed to log hundreds of miles yet in them, but given the 7 still shows no sign of any real wear, we’re pretty confident in the shoe’s durability. (Although, to be fair that’s not really an issue for any shoes these days).

Conclusion

There will be athletes out there who can run in these every day, but for most of us they are all about fast paced sessions and races all the way up to the marathon. We were most at home in them over 10km to half marathon but they can operate above or below that comfortably.
