Our verdict

Saucony are really pulling out all the stops with the Hurricane ISO 4. It’s a huge move on from the popular Hurricane ISO 3 with re worked elements throughout. The biggest selling point of this shoe is the fact that it’s a traditional support shoe, but has the feel and performance of a much faster, lighter neutral shoe. It gives the opportunity for an over pronator to wear a very responsive product, not a stiffer support shoe they are used to…

  • Positive
  • Full length EverRun cushioning
  • Amazingly flexible for the support shoe
  • Saucony Iso upper enhanced with plush tongue
  • Negative
  • May not offer enough support for some runners

First impressions

The Hurricane series has always been about offering a stable shoe that offers a mixture of response and flexibility. Past models have been very good but the new Hurricane ISO 4 has taken this series to another level.

A FULL LENGTH EverRun midsole from heel to toe… Super squishy, super light, super flexible and super durable.. Did I forget to tell you its Super! The advantage of EverRun, a compound from BASF is that its going to last a very long time, giving you hours and miles of pretty consistent cushioning and responsiveness, unlike traditional EVA’s that tend to go dead after 2-300 miles. There is a ¾ medial posted midsole to keep you stable, and the size is perfect. Its not intrusive, but it kicks in through the gait cycle perfectly to help reduce the excessive over pronation.

But, there is a bonus from Saucony on this shoe, as we got told the coloured top-layer of the midsole is a super soft, and springy EverRun compound, next to the foot, to enhance the cushioning and responsiveness even further.

The Saucony Hurricane ISO 4 has the much loved ISO upper technology with the independent finger type lacing system that really adapts to any foot shape. It gives a really snug fit, without ever being too tight, and is really adaptable on a run when your feet swell with the heat. But the outstanding part of this upper is the tongue, its ultra plush and spongey, and gives such a nice feel when you slide the shoe on your foot… An zonal engineered mesh with vents and support woven into the design gives a smooth, loose and very comfortable feel that needed no breaking in.

Saucony’s Tri Flex outsole is the big story here, with plenty of flex grooves and cored out rubber. If you have run in a Saucony model recently if probably has this technology on there too, so you know exactly what you are getting. A durable, smooth riding outsole that is basic looking but with a technical, well thought through performance.

Another winner from Saucony – who are quickly building a complete range of shoes that are best in class in most categories. The Hurricane ISO 4 is a true high performance support shoe that does exactly what it needs in terms of supporting the foot through the running gait cycle, but exceeds all expectations when it comes to cushioning and responsiveness. This is really a high performance running shoe, that is capable of eating up the heavy miles, but perfectly adept at taking you round a tempo run with ease. The midsole is one of the Rolls Royce units on the market and combined with the ISO fit upper, Saucony have some amazing technology on the market right now.. I am a big big fan of this shoe, it was a pleasure to run in… and I'm still running in them!
