Our verdict

As a second generation of the Noosa FF line, asics have done an excellent job of ironing out some of the issues with the original shoe – making the upper much more supple especially in the forefoot to allow a sockless wear option that is needed in triathlons.

  • Positive
  • An improved smooth upper for sockless wear
  • Wet grip outsole
  • A simplified product that looks great
  • Negative
  • Expensive for a racing shoe
  • Gel only in the heel

First impressions

A road racing shoe that performs admirably. The midsole / outsole is the same as the original Noosa FF which was always great underfoot. Light, responsive and flexible with enough cushioning to make this an occasional training shoe, and credible racing shoe.

FlyteFoam midsole creates a lightweight, cushioned platform and the sticky rubber outsole combines to make a great all round unit. Why asics don’t put gel in the forefoot in such an expensive product is a mystery to us though!

Midsole

Utilizing the asics FlyteFoam midsole material – which is claimed to be 55% lighter than industry standard, and great rebound properties, does deliver a good ride, and it’s a fast feeling shoe that is more than flexible enough to get on your toes and push the pace. Only gel in the heel for some reason, especially considering it’s a faster paced running shoe where you may want to be on your toes more often is quite confusing, but the foam is a good quality, so its not a big issue - Especially when the gel is a tiny as it is in this shoe (thumbnail size).

Upper

A highly breathable, and lightweight sandwich mesh forefoot gives a slipper like fit. The soft internal microfiber support straps and toe box re-enforcement allow the wearer to go sockfree – which is essential if your going to do a triathlon and where we tested these shoes.

The rear of the shoe has a strong heel counter, which allows you to easily slip your foot in the shoe (even when slightly wet) and no sew re-enforcement gives a good fit.

Sole

Cored out rubber for the maximum weight reduction and a really interesting wet grip compound make this a well thought through outsole for out and out road work. Maximum ground contact is the big design on this shoe, with almost no off road capability (but when would you really need that for a racing shoe), the outsole gives super grip and its light and fast. I have only done about 35 miles in this shoe, but its like new. Its not a shoe you will use too often, so the outsole is more than adequate.

Conclusion

A good road racing / triathlon shoe with all the key elements to a shoe that you need. Great upper that delivers supportive yet lightweight feel and the option of sockfree wear. A low profile, lightweight midsole made from asics excellent Flytefoam compound and a good quality sticky rubber outsole compound complete a capable all round shoe that continues asics successful triathlon racing line.
