A staple shoe for many athletes over the years, the Pegasus is essentially a no-nonsense, everyday trainer without the bells and whistles. In the last year or so Nike have tried to make it look a little more like its range topping racer, the Next%, with a slightly flared heel. It has also become a little narrower and concave in the shape of the midsole making it, if anything, a little less stable. The shoe performs well, but it is best suited to truely neutral runners.
The Nike Zoom Pegasus 37 is a shoe capable of covering most, if not all of the bases with regards your daily training needs. Good cushioning, reasonable traction for most surfaces and good value. If you don't have any stability or control concerns it's a great shoe.
Slightly softer than previous versions, the shoe feels different, but not too dfferent to be an issue. As always it offers a soft and smooth ride for the neutral athlete. Like many of the brands shoes, its taken some design inspiration from the top end racers, so it looks cool and the fit is top drawer.
Now featuring React foam and a larger forefoot Air unit the shoe feels a little softer, a little springier and a little less stable. Thats not a major concern, just something to be aware of if you would normally opt for a more stable shoe. It rides well and feels good at any pace. That new larger air cushioning unit also adds to the overall durability of the shoes cushioning, providing a better ride for longer.
The lightweight mesh upper has an almost translucent design and allows for great breathability. With integrated bands to hold and support the midfoot, it's a great fit, if a little on the slim side.
The familiar Waffle design is still present and as always provides great traction for a variety of surfaces. Unless you are venturing way of the beaten track, this shoe is very capable on light trails and tracks as well as the roads.
A great shoe without doubt and scores a very good 8.5. Not too different from previous versions and as Nike not choose to limit distribution to 'big-box' online retails within the UK (and most parts of the world) you'll always find these retailers slashing around 25% off the previous version as soon as a new model is announced - and in this case, it makes the Pegasus 36 a fantastic shoe at what is now entry level money!
For alternatives, check out the Mizuno Wave Rider or the New Balance 880.
