Our verdict

Let's face it, how would a brand like Nike mess up its icon of running... Sure they play around with shoes and some are better than others, but the Pegasus 36 continues a long line of no frills yet beautifully executed training shoes that delivers mile after mile of fantastic cushioning.

  • Positive
  • One stop shop training shoe
  • Upper is simple, comfortable and flywire delivers amazing support
  • Smooth heel to toe transition that is hard to beat
  • Negative
  • Slightly too slim for everyone
  • Tongue is slightly thin

First impressions

The key to the Pegasus 36 is its balance of cushioning versus responsiveness that delivers a shoe that is able to come with almost any training. It's a wonderful all round shoe that is great when you push the pace along but responsive when you just want to have a slow jog day.

Nike deliver a no frills shoe that is agressively priced and dominates the market because if its fantastic value yet superb performance. The ride is smooth and it urges you to get on your toes. The durabiliy is superb thanks to the extensive rubber coverage on the outsole.

Far from the lightest, fastest or most cushioned Nike shoe, it's ok at everything making it fantastic value for anyone wanting a more traditional everyday training shoe.

The Pegasus 36 sits towards the bottom of Nike's neutral shoe offering. Above it sit the Nike Zoom Vomero 14, the Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit, the Zoom Pegasus Turbo 2 and the Nike Joyride. That said, for most of us, it's as good a shoe as we'll ever need.

Midsole

A high end Phylon foam delivered in a 10 mm drop midsole has nothing sticking out and looks really clean - with the fin design, which isnt my cup of tea, sticking out of the back.

Nike's full-length Zoom Air unit runs heel to toe, which is easily the best air bag Nike make as it's the most responsive. The unit has a lovely rocker shape and flicks up nicely in the forefoot to promote a really nice toe off and gives you a real sensation of speed.

Upper

An engineered mesh with no overlays delivers a clean and breathable upper that is snug and smooth. The flywire midfoot lock down of threads that intergrate and pull with the laces is superb and delivers a unique and personalised fit.

Certainly not the best looking Nike shoe, or any shoe for that matter, but Nike have put in everything that is needed and nothing that isn't into this upper to ensure that the price is kept ultra competitive compared to other shoes in the neutral category.

The asymetical shaped tongue is really well thought out, but it's really quite thin and its folding oddly and annoying me slightly after about 15 runs - I tied the shoe up wrongly once and now the tongue is natually folding in a really bad place as it has been creased - it's annoying me!

Sole

A cored out rubber outsole that has full ground contact is really durable and the small yet substantial Nike waffle lugs deliver amazing traction on a variey of surfaces - again enhancing the Pegasus 36 ability to pitch itself as the most versatile value runner on the market.

Conclusion

Very little to not like about this shoe. It has got everything that anyone really needs from great cushioning to fantastic durability. For the price, it is constantly hard to find a better packaged shoe delivering all the essentials for day to day running.
