The Nike LunarEpic Low Flyknit 2 is a premium, daily running shoe designed for a neutral foot motion. It offers a smooth and flexible ride over any distance. It works well and looks super-cool. Bonus!
The LunarEpic Low Flyknit 2 incorporates plenty of Nike’s cushioning and fit innovations. You’ll get full-length Lunarlon for a nice spongey ride and you’ll enjoy the Flywire lock down for a good fit. True, you might think it’s on the pricey side but for the money there’s plenty to like, not least the look, which did convince one or two of our testing team to wear these out and about around town. The adidas Ultra Boost would be a good alternative to consider.
Soft, but on the harder side, if that makes any sense. We quite liked the slip-on style fit of the shoe that can be locked down for performance purposes. All in all, good looking and first impressions say it’s not going to provide too many issues.
The Lunarlon foam in the midsole provides a firmer, but cushioned ride without any real additional weight (8.8 ounces for a men’s size 10). Lunarlon is a combination of soft and firm foam that helps absorb impact and create a smooth heel-to-toe transition and our test team report that’s pretty much true. Some Nikes can be on the soft side but the LunarEpic Flyknit Low 2 is a little stiffer and harder than older models and to be honest the 2 is way better than the 1 which had a more difficult to handle high top-type construction. Given this model is named ‘low’ that probably suggests ‘high’ will be with us some time soon, but we’ll see. Anyway, under the full length Lunarlon you have what Nike Nike describes as Flexpods which are strategically placed to diffuse impact. They seem to work as it’s definitely comfortable on footstrike. The flex grooves running along the shoe allow the Lunarlon to compress and do it’s work, again something the shoe certainly seems to do.
While it doesn’t stand out as something you’d put on for racing or something a hardcore 100-mile a week college athlete might appreciate, it certainly covers all bases for most runners interested in 20-30 comforable miles per week thanks to that softer-hard ride.
Nike have really worked on fit and as expected the Flyknit upper is breathable and very flexible altthough for some that can mean they are bit loose. In fact the testing team report that the shoe works quite well as a slip-on fashion number as well as a performance shoe. So you can just slip them on without bothering with the laces, or thanks to the Flywire technology which uses threads to hold the laces in place for a better fit, you can happily crank up the pace in them. Indeed, Flywire owes its innovation to basketball where your foot really needs to be held firmly in position so you can see this is a good shoe. The back neoprene lining is nice and comfortable, sock-like in fact and allows for a snug fit that flexes with every footstrike.
We like the LunarEpic Flyknit Low 2 in that it works well for most neutral runners. It’s soft, but not overly so and it’s light but not like a racing shoe. And it can cope with looking good after running as a fashion type shoe which while not essential for a performance shoe, is pretty good given the price. That sums up the shoe perfectly – good for most things, but if you’re looking for the next level up, well consider an additional pair for your collection.
