First impressions

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! That seems to be the order of the day with the Nike Air Pegasus 34. It shares many features of the Pegasus 33 but comes with a new and improved upper. This upper is much more breathable and the shoe now fits better. The toe box is wider which is an improvement over the 33 and the mesh use seems stretchier. This works in tandem with the flywire lacing system and the new flat laces to provide a really well-fitting shoe. We found them to be snug but not overly tight – just right!

The shoe features a full-length midsole foam containing two zoom air bags, one in the front, the other under the heel. They feel great underfoot; they are responsive and transition from heel to toe feels fast, just don’t expect the Pegasus to be a soft shoe.

The Pegasus has been the mainstay of the nike range for decades. It’s a neutral, well cushioned and responsive shoe designed for everyday use – that’s the brief, pure and simple. There are shoes with more cushioning in the nike range and elsewhere, there are shoes that are lighter or more responsive, but if you want a shoe that feels as good on a long run as it does on a tempo run, then the Pegasus 34 could be the shoe for you.

Midsole

Nike’s Cushlon ST material delivers a smooth riding feel to the shoe. The inclusion of the Zoom Air heel and forefoot air bags ensures responsive cushioning rather than a big soft cushioned feel. The transition feels fast so if you wish to pick the pace up, you’ll be able to with effortlessly in the Pegasus.

That said, the Pegasus 34 is not a super-flexible shoe and we know people did mention that the previous model felt a little stiff.

Upper

As mentioned, the real difference between the Pegasus 33 and this 34 version is in the upper. The seemless and lightweight Flymesh is a more open design which obviously helps breathability but they also feel better on the foot.

The Dynamic Fit flywire technology is repeated from the previous model but they are hidden within the mesh. Tightening the shoe with the new flat laces really pulls the body of the upper around your foot without ever feeling overtight. Snug is good but the fit might not suit runners with very wide feet.

There is a hard, internal heel counter adds some stability. It holds the heel securely and the padded collar stops any slippage. The upper package is rounded off with a Fitsole sockliner which is anatomically shaped and provides an additional layer of cushioning directly underfoot.

Sole

The rubber outsole offers waffle lugs that are strategically designed for impact absorption. It offers good levels of grip on the road, is fine on light trail and parkland and is also durable. The numerous flex grooves in the outsole will aid flexibility and the ‘guidance groove’ in the outsole should help stability.

Conclusion

Responsive, lightweight, breathable, well-cushioned and all at a very good price. The Air Zoom Pegasus 34 is a very accomplished everyday training shoe that you’ll be able to use from short distances to long, at slow speeds through to faster training sessions. For the neutral runner, that is one hell of a package.
