This low riding trainer is lightweight and with an energy returning midsole, will feel fast. Best for tempo sessions and short to mid-distance races.
The Newton Gravity VI is a lightweight, daily trainer and like all Newtons is packed full of tech. The Gravity series has always been extremely popular with Newton fans and we don’t think this new version will disappoint.
If new to Newton shoes you’ll notice that they look a little different and believe us when we say they ride very differently. They have a very low heel to toe drop and the midsole technology takes some getting used to but they’d be a good shoe to have as part of your weekly running shoe collection.
The Gravity VI seems less ‘flourescent’ than previous models but they still feel socklike on your foot. We know these shoes are popular with triathletes who may choose not to wear socks and nothing has changed, they’re really comfortable with or without socks.
There is not too much different from the previous Gravity V. The shoe is designed to get you up on to your toes and it certainly does that and I felt if anything, the shoe had a firmer but more cushioned ride. The shoe still delivers a low and fast ride that Newton fans will be pleased with.
The upper hasn’t changed much from the Gravity V, the 4-way stretch mesh holds your foot well and the heel counter felt solid. That said, the tongue is too short and the laces barely cross it at the top if using the additional lock-down lace hole.
A new Newtonium layer of foam sits on a high-rebound EVA material in the midsole. The Newtonium layer brings the cushioning closer to your feet. Together they provided a firm feeling responsive ride which I enjoyed. The midsole features Newton’s POP, or ‘point of power’ technology; lugs that recede in to air-filled chambers to help cushion the ride.
I really liked the cleaner open mesh design of the Gravity VI. It has a no-nonsense approach and everything is there to do a job. The engineered mesh is lightweight and breathable, the minimal overlays strengthen around the lace and high stress areas maintaining lightweight flexibility.
The outsole features Newton’s SHARC material which is just a durable, high-abrasive rubber compound. The lugs in the forefoot are made of a high density rubber which will aid durability.
The Gravity VI has maintained its reputation of being a lightweight super responsive shoe and Newton fans will be pleased with that. The combination of the midsole elements makes this shoe feel lively and it is ideal for faster tempo runs and racing. If new to Newton, the shoe will take time to get used to so start gently with it once or twice a week.
The Gravity VI is a very clean-looking comfortable shoe that, like all Newtons, should be extremely durable.
