A friendly introduction to the hardcore world of racing. It is well-cushioned and flexible but lends itself to a bit of everyday action should the impulse take you. If you are thinking of trying racing shoes for the first time, these provide a good route in.

Our verdict

A lightweight trainer that offers a firm responsive ride that feels fast. Good looking and comfortable, this shoe is a bargain but, we'd probably not want to run in them daily. Perfect for tempo running.

First impressions

The Foam Zante v3 men’s lightweight running shoe features an aggressive toe spring and a comfortable no-sew material application for a sleek fit. Taking inspiration from iconic ‘70s and ‘80s models, the new suede/mesh upper has iridescent highlights for a modern look. Look to the Nike Free R for something similar.

First Impressions? Retro fans will love it, although it does appear to fall between two stools – not quite a racer, definitely not a mileage munching shoe. It’s quick that much is for sure, but is it really cushioned enough for today’s runner?

On the foot though, they feel amazingly comfortable. The upper is breathable and the fit like a glove. Wider foot runners might struggle a little though but a wider shoe width version is available. Although light, they ride really well on the road and you'll be tempted to pick the pace up. They're responsive and the cushioning is on the firm side which we were fine with. A shoe great for tempo runs and racing we'd suggest.

Midsole

Soft as Fresh Foam undoubtedly is, our test team reports these shoes are a little on the firmer side than other NBs. A slightly modified Fresh Foam midsole utilizes more prominent concave and convex geometric shapes for an improved ride and additional carbon rubber on the outsole increases traction and durability. The 6mm heel to toe drop means they are pretty user friendly and you’ll be able to get on with them quicker than a 4mm shoe that takes that little longer for your body to adjust to.

Upper

The update team have been hard at work to revamp the upper slightly from v2. There are larger mesh holes on top of the forefoot for better breathability and a tighter weave midfoot for improved stability.

Conclusion

These are definitely worth looking at if you’re in the market for making the transition to faster shoes. They offer a good mix of cushioning v performance. The only thing is, you’ll probably be restricted to as and when you can use them. An everyday runner that isn’t quite. At the price, it's hard to knock these shoes though and worth having in a collection of training shoes. Great for tempo running.

How was the New Balance Zante v3 for you? Let us know, we’d love to report your findings.
