This timely update is just what was required to inject a little life into the 860. Already a popular and effective model for over-pronators, this update sees the addition of FreshFoam cushioning and a redesign to the upper to improve fit and feel.

Our verdict

A great update makes this shoe a serious contender among the company of the most popular models in this category. Certainly worth considering when looking for a supportive everyday training shoe.

  • Positive
  • FreshFoam cushioning
  • New heel collar design
  • Good support
  • Negative
  • None

First impressions

The heel collar looks unusual but fits beautifully. It's snug thanks to the internally sculpted padding that sits around the heel bone to hold it firmly in place.

The additon of FreshFoam cushioning gives a slighly softer and more responsive feel that the previous edition. The cushioning was perfectly fine in that v10 model, but now, with a little added 'spring' the ride feels spot-on.

Midsole

A newly shaped medial post maintains the support of the previous model so for over-pronators the shoe works well. It's the addition of the Fresh Foam cushioning inserts that add to he ride and improve feel. The overall ride is a little softer, with an added 'spring'.

The step-in experience is now comparable to shoes like the Brooks Adrenaline GTS20 and that's quite the compliment.

Upper

It's all about that heel collar design. The Pre-formed shape turns away from the Achilles yet thanks to the internally shaped padded it sits neatly around the heel bone to provide a secure fit without added pressure.

Elsewhere the seamless design uses a light and breathable mesh that uses closely knitted sections to add support. The lacing eyelets are bonded in place and sit neatly on the instep.

Sole

As a road shoe traction is good and after around a hunded test miles so far, durability is excellent with little signs of wear. The blown rubber sections fo the sole add to the comfort and ride and help keep the weight down.

Conclusion

A great update that should certainly make this shoe a model to be contended with in this very competitve section of the market.
