Our verdict

A shoe designed to run just 1 mile flat out and that carbon plate might just help you break your very best times.

  • Positive
  • Super lightweight
  • Highly responsive
  • A track spike for the road
  • Negative
  • Price
  • Limited use

First impressions

The curve of the embedded Carbon plate is immediately obvious in these shoes. They look like a cross between a track spike and road racer, this model was specifically designed with road races of just one mile in mind.

The 5280 is the ultimate flat out racer, but if you want a more versatile shoe, look at the NB 1500 v6.

Midsole

The FuelCell midsole is already the brand's most responsive cushioning material; light with a natural spring to it and with the addition of the carbon plate, the shoe noticeably puts you more onto your mid/forefoot to enhance your natural gait.

Upper

A minimal sock-like upper holds this tech in place with the shoe feeling like an extention of the foot.

Sole

Tacky EVA injected with Dynaride Rubber and an optimized lug configuration creates the best traction at toe-off.

Conclusion

If you are in the market for a road mile shoe, consider the New Balance. They might well provide you with the fastest mile you'll ever be capable of!
