Without doubt a great shoe, but with the regular version of the Wave Rider being such a great shoe and cheaper, it's tricky to find a reason why you'd pay more for this model.

Our verdict

A great shoe, but costing more than the Wave Rider, it's hard to find much of a difference to justify the extra cash. The upper has a more premium feel to it; or should that be different, the 'standard' version is good anyway. So ultimately it will come down to the subtle feel on your foot. You're getting a great shoe whichever you choose!

  • Positive
  • Smooth riding Enerzy cushioning
  • Great fitting upper
  • Lively, dynamic feel
  • Negative
  • More expensive than the 'regular' Wave Rider

First impressions

Fancy upper, new Enerzy midsole cushioning, fits and feels great.

Midsole

The familiar Wave plate is here, this time encased with a layer of the brands new Enerzy midsole material. It's slightly springier and more responsive. That said Mizuno isn't embracing deep, maximal type midsole cushioning in the same many of many other brands, so the overall stack height is lower than many competitors in this price bracket. That makes for a racier feel and sits you slightly closer to the ground.

Upper

A neat, slightly 'bootie' construction sits a little higher up around the ankle. Its neatly finished and doesnt feel as intrusive as it might otherwise appear. It's not serving any specific perpose, but it's different and look kinda cool so hey, embrace the styling.

Sole

A typically road runing design, but the small lugs do a reasonable job on tracks and light trails too, so no issues here.

Conclusion

A nice shoe that shoecases some of the slightly different things the brand can do. Ultimately it's not that differenct form the Wave Rider and you'll pay a decent chunk more for the extra styling. Make no mistake, its a great fitting and feeling shoe, so if you like the look of it you're sure to enjoy it.
