Our verdict

A lightweight, comfortable, grippy off-road racer. Great performance but probably not for long distances.

First impressions

Inov8's lightest, most flexible trail running shoe. The ROCLITE 290 is designed for running quickly over multi terrains. Delivering a responsive ride and high levels of durability, it's designed to be deliver high levels of grip over everything from wet mountain rock to muddy grass, hard-packed trails and roads.

With the shoes on, it feels stripped down and ready for action and a first glance at the sole suggests grip won’t be an issue. Would you venture beyond 10 or 12 miles in them? Possibly not, but you know what you’ve putting on such is the racing shoe feel.

Midsole

It uses Power Flow for cushioning and operates off a 4mm drop which tells you this is flat to the ground and sharp. There is some cushioning but not excessive (as you’d expect from such a light shoe).

POWERFLOW is Inov8's midsole foam and they claim it delivers 10% better shock absorption and 15% better energy return than standard midsoles. It felt like it offered a softer ride than other low-riders.

Second-generation META-SHANK is a rock plate that protects the underfoot from sharp rocks, while a strengthened rubber toe-cap shields the toes from obstructive debris.

Upper

Inov8's upper is lightly padded with a slim toe bumper and a Y-Lock heel system holds the heel in place. The rock plate provides good protection, while the ADAPTERWEB met-cradle holds your feet securely and the fit is standard throughout.

Sole

The tread isn’t very deep but copes well in mud, and it’s also excellent on gravel, grass and rock. It’s comfortable although not hugely protective.

Conclusion

Fast and ready for action; don’t take them out for long, slow runs, instead save them for racing and days when performance is important.

Technical info

POWERFLOW Midsole delivers 10% better shock absorption and 15% better energy return than standard midsoles.

Built around the natural anatomy of the foot, the new ADAPTERWEB met-cradle adapts to the natural movement and swelling of the foot in motion, while the Y-LOCK system holds the heel in place and offers support.

Second-generation META-SHANK is a rock plate that protects the underfoot from sharp rocks, while a strengthened rubber toe-cap shields the toes from obstructive debris.
