Our verdict

Even though you find yourself sitting on top of some serious cushioning, neutral runners will enjoy the freedom this shoe allows even though it calls itself a lifestyle shoe. It is always eye-opening to run in Hoka, with the cushioning and competitive light weight always a surprise.

First impressions

The Hupana’s responsiveness is due to its full RMAT midsole and outsole which creates a sensation of flying just above the ground. This feeling is reinforced by the ultra-breathability of the knitted upper. The Hupana is a shoe you can wear all day. Think Nike Lunar Epic for a similar experience.

First Impressions? There’s lots of talk about its casual nature and yes it does look, well a bit, ordinary. Light, flexible, clearly cushioned but not quite a running shoe, but is.

Midsole

Responsive and resilient. Wear can be a slight issue for Hoka but the Hupana appears to have conquered that and wears very well indeed. Hoka’s RMAt provides underfoot stablity and there’s been plenty of work to makes sure traction is up to speed – a criss-cross of gullies provide traction points along with flex grooves, which are essential for a natural movement. As you’d expect from such a cushioned platfom, the rebound is excellent and as ever with Hoka, it’s all working form a 5mm heel to toe drop – albeit from a rather elevated position.

Upper

Knitted upper which is new to Hoka; it works well and is super comfortable but, say one or two of our testing team, does need a little refining. With super critical heads on, some say it’s a little too inflexible and not quite breathable enough although only the hyper critical will notice that. What you do note is the weight – light (9.1oz) so the knit doesn’t add anything in that department. Being a lifestyle shoe, they are a little loose around the heel.

Conclusion

A shoe that can cope with your casual, about town needs or should the urge take you, cope with a real run with real needs… and a great price. What’s not to like.

How was the Hoka Hupana for you? Let us know, we’d love to report your findings.
