HOKA cushioning with a carbon plate to appeal to those wanting to be part of the current trend for carbon plated race shoes.

Our verdict

Light and fast for those used to a low drop shoe. Simple design and carbon plate make this a must have shoe for fans of the brand wanting to join the carbon band wagon!

  • Positive
  • Familiar Hoka cushioning
  • Lightweight
  • Negative
  • Use of carbon plate is not as effective as in other shoes
  • Baggy fit around forefoot

First impressions

In this shoe, the Carbon plate exists to reinforce the brands ‘rocker’ shape. On its own, the aim of the exaggerated rocker sole is to improve the forward roll of the foot. Combined with a stiff plate the rocker shape remains in shape for longer aiding the durability of the shoe.

The combination of the simple lightweight cushioning and the lightweight upper produces a light, well-cushioned and stiff shoe that encourages a larger toe-off area and hopefully speed!

Midsole

As with all of the brands shoes, the cushioning is deep yet light, making this a popular shoe with ultra-distance road runners. The midsole has a rocker shape from the heel to toe to help the foot 'roll' forward easily. The Carbon plate emphasises this roll. The stiffened plate also helps minimise the deformation of the cushioning over time as it would normally compress and loose shape.

Upper

The upper features a single-use engineered mesh which keeps the feet cool but will weigh very little indeed. These shoes are all about function!

The slightly baggy fit around the forefoot maybe an issue for some ladies, espically those with a slimmer or lower volume fit.

Sole

A rubberised outsole simply aims to enhance durability. There is little in the way of traction, so its purely a road going model.

Conclusion

Built for speed over the long-distance, these shoes would be great if you are an experienced Hoka user and aiming to go very long. The carbon plate will keep you rolling forward like no other Hoka before.

Technical info

Tech features a CM-EVA midsole for cushioning with a carbon fibre plate situated between it and the rubberised outsole. The carbon plate helps to maintain the rocker shape of the cushioning.
