The Hoka One One Bondi 5 is designed for running on hard, man-made surfaces; it gives you the cushiest of long rides, and just enough traction to let you wander onto light trails should the mood take. Hoka really stands out on its own, but something similar try the Brooks Pureflow 6.
First Impressions? Pick them up, flex them, check out that amazing looking cushioning. You cannot fail but be impressed with a shoe like this. The question, of course, is how they handle. Certainly from first feel, they look surprisingly nimble for something so bulky.
The only place to start is with the midsole, which as the looks suggest, offers amazing cushioning. It has full length EVA cushioning and works with Hoka’s Meta-Rocker to produce a natural low to the ground feel on top of what Hoka says is its most cushioned road shoe yet. You’ll hear it a thousand times, but wearing a Hoka is not a million miles removed from ‘hot tubbing’ for you feet. Relaxed and oh so comfortable.
Underneath this significant stack of cushioned foam there has been some updates. The lug pattern on the outsole now creates much better traction and Zonal Rubber placement means durability is better. That has been an issue in the past so keep an eye on that.
Given Hoka now say this shoe can venture off-road should you so desire, it’s good to learn the upper is breathable and quick drying. It works around what Hoka describe as a Comfort Frame which provides support as does the 3D Puff Print Frame.
A daily running shoe that allows you to experience a low heel to toe profile (4mm) from the comfort of a sofa! Always interesting, the Bondi is definitely worth a go.
