The most stable (supportive) shoe from HOKA. It still uses the deep, maximal cushioned midsole but here it contains the brand's J shaped second density cushioning to help maintain stability. If you want maximal cushioning but also need support, this is the one to go for.

Our verdict

Not so much a shoe for over-pronators as it tends to guide the foot rather than prevent excessive motion. It does a reasonable job and is the most stable model in the HOKA line-up. Don't think simply because it's the brands most 'controlling' shoe it will work for everyone though. That low heel drop may not be for everyone, so this isn't a 'get out of jail card' if you are injured. Yes it's cushioned and yes stable but purchase for cushioning and stability rather than injury treatment.

First impressions

The most supportive and stable model from HOKA.

Deep HOKA cushioning and their J shaped RMAT cushioning system combine to provide a steady ride.

The Gaviota is one of just two models in the stability range, the other being the Hoka Arahi 4.

Midsole

The maximal cushioned midsole features the familiar deep, oversized HOKA cushioning. This model provides stability by using a second density foam (RMAT - a blend of EVA and rubber) in a J shaped configuration around the lateral and medial  sides of the shoe.

This firmer J shaped material essentially helps keep the foot in a more neutral position.

You still have a lower heel drop at 5mm as well as deep cushioning in the rocker shape, and although that rocker isn't overly pronounced, the shoe can still feel a little clumsy.

Upper

A breathable mesh upper contains a midfoot strap incorporated into the laces to provide further support to the foot. The fit is good, if anything a little roomier than many HOKA models, so accomodates a wider range of foot shapes with ease.

Sole

The standard HOKA outsole of strategically placed rubber to increase durability in areas of key wear. Traction is ok on the roads, but don't expect deep lugs here.

Conclusion

It's very stable and in fact the most stable HOKA shoe, so if you want to experience that max cushion feel and low drop, then this is the model to plump for.

Technical info

RMAT J-Frame provides dynamic stability by placing RMAT along the medial side of the shoe and around the heel to guide the foot naturally without using a standard medial post. RMAT is HOKA's blend of rubber and EVA foam for durable, responsive cushioning.

Late Stage Meta-Rocker Geometry is a rockered midsole design engineered to create a stable base of forefoot support

Hi-Abrasion Lightweight Rubber is strategically placed for increased traction and durability.

Engineered mesh on the upper is lightweight and allows for excellent airflow and breathability.

Arch-lock wings provide necessary structure around the midfoot.

Molded Ortholite Sockliner helps with odor management while providing additional underfoot cushioning.
