Our verdict

Designed for everyday running, the HOKA ONE ONE Clifton 7 offers a silky-smooth ride and a high level of comfort and protection at a low weight

  • Positive
  • Amazing cushioning to weight ratio
  • Wide and deep midsole offers great stability
  • Clean and simple upper delivers support and breathability
  • Negative
  • Toe-off isn't a good as some newer rocker profile shoes
  • Rubber coverage on the outsole is not ideal

First impressions

The latest version of the shoe that changed runners’ perceptions of what HOKA could be, the Clifton 7 joins the award-winning Clifton family. Building on the Clifton’s best-loved qualities, the 7 takes the shoe back to its original wins to deliver the ideal combination of soft shock absorbsion with incredibly light results.

Midsole

The same midsole from the Clifton 6 uses a full compression EVA that is oversized in a Meta-Rocker profile technology and continues the much loved cushioning with a 29mm heel and 24mm forefoot.

The lack of flexibility and the reduced toe spring compared to some modern rocker shoes make the Clifton 7 feel flatter and more laboured than some competitors at pace, so it is slightly less versatile than say the Nike Zoom X Invincible

Upper

A breathable, engineered mesh provides an incredibly breathable and light upper. Most of the pointless overlays have been removed and this is very clean and simple but hightly effective and holding the foot firmly in place with no hot spots.

A gusset tongue wraps the foot and locks the tongue in place firmly, which was a massive issue on the Clifton 6!

The Achilles tab has an new banana shape to help getting the shoe on and off, but makes it easier for annoying stones to find the their way into the shoe.

Sole

A podded outsole, and lots of visible EVA deliver just enough durability to consider this a high mileage shoe, but light enough ensure there is a surprising cushioning to weight ratio. The traction is good but not perfect, and the EVA holds up pretty well to abrasion making this a reasonably hard wearing shoe overall.

Conclusion

The size of midsole overall makes the weight even more surprising and this Hoka has a beautiful combination of fantastic cushioning and great stability. Even though this is realistically just and update to the upper, the whole balance of this shoe is greatly improved over the Clifton 6.

Overall, this is a great update and a great shoe for a really good price. If you have not hopped on the Hoka train yet and tried a pair, the Clifton 7 is a really good place to start.

For alternatives, look towards the Nike Pegasus or the New Balance 1080.
