Nothing in the shoe blew me away, as its just an incredibly solid and reliable shoe all round. But for the price, the Revel has unbelievable bang for your buck!
Shoes at this price should not perform this well, as it makes selling higher priced shoes hard to justify for a brand. Well that would be the cast if the higher priced shoe was possibly the best shoe on the market today - Brooks Ghost 10. The Brooks Revel is an aggressively priced neutral cushion shoe that performs way beyond its price tag, with plush, generous cushioning and a well executed upper that is supple and extremely comfortable.
If someone had not already told me the price of the shoes before I recieved them and run in them I would have happily said these were way more expensive then they are. This is a whole new adventure for Brooks which I will talk about in the conclusion - but after 50 miles inc a 17 mile run, I can only say that the Brooks Revel are a very well cushioning and incredibly comfortably pair of running shoes for the neutral runner. Its almost rude to call them entry level, as they really dont feel that way! Its a simplified and stripped back Brooks Ghost in feel and ride, so the compiments cannot be any higher!
The Revel has a full length BioMoGo DNA midsole that delivers a Brooks feel perfectly, and is engineered to de-couple and support in all the right places. Unlike some higher priced Brooks shoes the Revel does not have the fully segmented Caterpillar crash pad design, but the heel section still carries this technology and it delivers a really smooth heel to toe transition that I would describe as slightly firmer than the Ghost 10 but of equal measure to some of the competitors such as Nike Pegaus, Saucony Ride and NB Vazee Pace. The flexibility is ok, not extreme, so its a solid feeling shoe rather than responsive, but as an every day trainer it is very nicely balanced.
A blend of knitted materials combining with an internal bootie skin for comfort and the welded exo skeletal frame on the midfoot delivers a supple soft feel that is supportive enough without being restictive. The bods at Brooks wanted a Street-Style vibe to this shoe to appeal to the mainstream runners who enter the running market by buying Nike and adidas so it has that casual element that is not seen on Brooks shoes before, but they build quality remains purely technical with a plush collar and internals to finish off a well made upper.
Carbon heel and a blown rubber forefoot offers decent overally protection and like all Brooks shoes I did wear our the heel crash pad faster than some other brands because of the segmented caterpiller cut out design. It is the one compromise I deal with on Brooks shoes, but I still always get a good 600+ miles in Brooks shoes before i reach the foam, and I am pretty sure that the Revel will be no different.
If you go on the Brooks website they rather embarrassingly photograph this shoe on foot with people in Jeans - promoting its 'casual appeal'. Brooks went back to basics and built best in class shoes some time ago, and the work they have done is nothing less than superb in creating some of the best running shoes available today. They recently spoke about the wider running audience and are pitching the Revel at the sport lifestyle market. They are wildly off the mark when it comes to competing in the fashion lifestyle running segment beause they cannot get away from the need to make a great running shoe first and foremost. What is can say, is the Revel is a fantastic shoe for the money and possibly even the 'BEST VALUE RUNNING SHOE ON THE MARKET RIGHT NOW'. It really is that good!
