An everyday sort of shoe that borders on being an out and out racer. It is fabulous for long reps and the kind of shoe you feel comfortable in pushing on the pace in a threshold run.

Our verdict

Versatile trainer, great on steady runs, great on faster tempo runs and for longer distance racing.

First impressions

Brooks has got to work on this $100 shoe and updated it with an extra hit of rebounding rubber under the forefoot and a redesigned heel that lets your neutral stride shine. The Launch 4 offers a lightweight, responsive ride that you can count on to feel fresh and springy mile after mile. For a similar performance type ride consider the New Balance Vazee Pace v2.

First Impressions? For what at first feels like a racing shoe, the Launch 4 actually quite cushioned and responsive. The light weight says ‘pace’, Brooks excellent midsole says ‘longer runs’. One to think about for a marathon.

Midsole

Brooks has made some minor changes to the ‘3’ by introducing a slight more responsive forefoot. As fans have come to expect, the cushioning is excellent – on the soft side – thanks to BioMogo DNA. It’s nice and flexible and thanks to that slight tweak in the design, happy to get you on your toes. Underneath that, you’ll experience all the usual extras you’d expect from shoes on the market today – there’s S-257 Cushole technology in the midsole for energy return, flexibilty and a touch of support.

Upper

Out testers scored this shoe highly on fit, thanks not least to the 3D Fit print which is strategically stretchable for added flexibility and impressive fit. In short, your foot is held in place when it needs to be, but if it needs to move to maxmise performance, well then 3D is happy to oblige. This works well with the shoe’s Air Mesh upper that keeps the foot well-ventilated. The synthetic overlays deliver a snug and secure fit.

Sole

As with many other Brooks shoes, there’s also a Segmented Crash Pad with continues on that energy return/stability theme. It works off a 10mm heel to toe drop.

And finally, the sole is pretty grippy and looks like it will last pretty well thanks to its high abrasion resistance.

Conclusion

We love the cushioning and general fit this shoe offers. It’s a comfortable offering in an area where as weight is stripped away that can be an issue for some. While not exactly an everyday, mud-loving, all weathers shoe, it does cope with longer efforts comfortable along with short, sharp pacey runs. Venture off-road at your peril, but enjoy the pace on it!
