Our verdict

A decent shoe for the money. Looks good and will do a great job for a lifestyle runner. Look for a deal on it or consider buying a better model from last seasons range in a sale but for the same price as the Pulse.

  • Positive
  • Full price is relatively good value
  • Durable and reliable
  • Clean looking and easy to wear
  • Negative
  • Cushioning nothing special and firm compared to many shoes
  • Wants to deliver a pointless lifestyle appeal
  • Big heel gel insert is heavy

First impressions

The ASICS Gel Pulse 11 sits at the value entrylevel for the Asics running range in terms of price. The Pulse is a shoe designed for the street runner in mind and offers a decent amount of tech for the price, BUT why buy a shoe full of compromises when you can spend just a little more and get a much better shoe, of a far better shoe in the sale.

This is very much a gym or non serious running shoe, that is fine but nothing special to be honest.

The ASICS Gel Pulse 11 uses a full-length Amplifoam midsole with a GEL® insert at the heel. It's a durable shoe and the cushioning is fine at this price, but the injection moulded EVA is firmer than most modern high end shoes, so dont expect this shoe to be bouncy like the Nimbus 21.

No gel in the forefoot isnt really a miss, and there is plenty protection, and the gel in the heel is large, but does add a little bit of weight.

The woven knitted upper allows air to move through the shoe, cooling feet down and keeping them dry no problem and the fit is stretchy. There is a clean and easy look to the shoe, for a cross over appeal to casual running so its more than able to perform.

The shoe also features an ORTHOLITE™ sockliner which adds another layer of comfort, and is good for a shoe this price.

The outsole features a molded rubber outsole which grips well on both dry and wet surfaces. The GUIDANCE LINE™ technology  cut through the outsole and in to the midsole which is aimed at boosting your natural gait efficiency, and works great, but it really works better when the midsole is 2 density like the higher end asics shoes. In the Pulse the Guideance Line is really only a design nod to the more technical shoes further up the range.

A decent, no nonsense shoe that's comfortable and fine for a neutral runner. Look for a deal on this model and it'll make a great second shoe, but to pay full price would be compromising your enjoyment for modern running shoes.
