Our verdict

Light and offering an energetic boost on every stride, the Novablast would be a good choice for faster training or even longer racing.

  • Positive
  • Light and fast
  • Responsive cushioning
  • Negative
  • A little unstable, neutral runners only

First impressions

When a brand uses ‘Trampoline effect’ in their description of a shoe we usually approach it with just a little trepidation. Thankfully here, the Novablast does have somewhat of a trampoline effect and it’s certainly a smile inducing ride as it enthusiastically takes you down the road.

The Novablast has been a welcome edition to the Asics running range. For alternatives, if you want a responsive training shoe at a similar price, have a look at the Asics Evoride but if you are after a lightweight trainer that would be light enough to race in, there are two classics: the Gel DynaFlyte 4 or the more stable Gel DS-Trainer 25.

Midsole

The shoe uses ASICS’ new FLYTEFOAM Blast material (a new mixture of foam) and that’s what gives it the unique feel. It’s a deeply cushioned ride too, so not a super lightweight model but certainly not heavy and it feels light and neat on the foot. Perfect for tempo runs, interval sessions or racing perhaps for heavier runners. The soft and responsive nature also means it’s strictly for those with a neutral gait as that springy feel and rather narrow footprint can make it feel a touch unstable.

Upper

The engineered mesh upper has a unique design which allows high breathability and provide a good, foot hugging fit.

Sole

With twice the abrasion resistance of Asics tradional rubber, AHARPLUS improves durability and traction.

Conclusion

A great addition to the Asics range and a good choice for a second shoe if you wish to move it along in training.
