The flagship shoe from Asics does not disappoint if you’re after a high-mileage cruiser. It offers a significant level of cushioning and stability and a welcomed improved fit over the previous model.
In the past, asics have made these shoes look like they’ve had had a fight with a paint factory, but we’re a fan of the Gel-Kayano 24’s much cleaner look. You know though that this is the Asics’ workhorse, their statement shoe. It’s no surprise then, that they feel slightly bulky in feel, but then again, they probably should be. After all, you want to feel that you’re getting what you pay for in a high mileage trainer and in the Kayano 24, you certainly feel self-assured.
The shoe felt great fresh out of the box. The fit is better in this latest model, it is wider in the toe box and the upper seems to hold your foot better. They are incredibly comfortable and we experience no rubbing or hint of blisters. The FlyteFoam midsole technology ensures a very smooth ride which remains through your run and they offer a high level of stability without feeling too bulky.
Comfort, durability and lightweight must have been the brief in the Asics lab and they certainly delivered, the midsole is loaded with tech. The Asics FluidRide offering features SpEVA and Solyte technologies designed to support you while offering lightweight cushioning and comfort. Asics Gel features in the heel area but it is the inclusion of the relatively new FlyteFoam technology (featured firstly in the Kayano 23) that really adds the bounce-back to this shoe.
Designed to compete with energy return systems found in other brands, FlyteFoam is lighter but offers exceptional bounce and comfort mile after mile. The Kayano 24’s offer a lively ride which feels great over time, but we did have some reservations on shorter faster runs though feeling though we might like a more responsive shoe. That said, this shoe is all about reducing fatigue and returning energy in a super-comfortable package and it does it brilliantly.
The Kayano 24 features the Asics Dynamic Duomax Support System on the medial side and to guide you through your running gait, helping to control pronation, improving stability without adding too much weight.
Asics have added a new and improved FluidFit upper to this model which is seamless and has a stretchy feel and fit to it. It is designed using a ‘jacquard mesh’ which certainly feels good on the foot. As previously mentioned, the fit is slightly wider in the toe box which will come as a big plus point to Kayano fans who felt the Kayano 23 was too constrictive.
An Ortholite sockliner sits inside the shoe adding an extra level of springy comfort that’s apparent as soon as you slide your foot in to the shoe.
The ‘exoskeleton’ MetaClutch heel griping system and new heel liner certainly holds the heel securely
The outsole features the Asics Impact Guidance System, designed to allow the foot to perform a more natural heel-to-toe movement. In addition, a Trussic System links the rearfoot to the forefoot, this guidance line technology helps deliver a more consistent directional gait.
AHAR+ (Asics High Abrasion Resistant rubber) super durable rubber features in high wear areas, and flex grooves help with forefoot flexibility.
We felt that the shoe performed really well on road and light trail offering very good levels of grip.
Asics have delivered a shoe that is a definite improvement over the previous model. The Gel-Kayano 24 is a really well-cushioned, stable and lightweight workhorse of a shoe that was a joy to run in mile after mile. We would recommend it for long-distance training and consider it for longer races, however, it is not a shoe for the swift.
