A daily running shoe that provides a solid combination of performance and value for money.
The GT series has always been aimed at a runner wanting that combination of stability and performance cushioning at a very solid price. The GT 2000 6 version offers all that, and a bit more…
This is a no-nonsense sort of shoe and the tweaks to this new version 6 have been well-thought out by asics. It’s a shoe that is packed with technology and for a price that competes favourably with its competition.
Fresh from the box, the shoe looks good. It is well made, has nice upper detailing, FlyteFoam midsole… It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of more expensive models but this is a shoe that asks the question, “do you really need the bells and whistles?”
There have been a few tweaks made to this new model. The upper has had a make-over, the midsole has moved from the Fluidride featured in the v5 model to Asics’s FlyteFoam technology which reduces the weight of the shoe. The last of the shoe is different and now provides a slightly roomier feel in the forefoot and a snugger feel at the heel. So how do they perform?On the run, they feel really good due to that FlyteFoam which gives you more ‘bounce back’ than the previous model did. They’re really comfortable on-foot and the roomier toebox is an improvement. You’ll be thankful for the lighter weight, especially noticeable on the longer runs, but they also offer you the option of running faster in them if you so wish. This offers you a greater degree of flexibility in how you might choose to use them, i.e. train for and run your marathon in them for example. The heel drop is a standard and comfortable 10mm. They were flexible enough with the flex grooves cut in to the outsole helping and while we didn’t take them off-road, road grip was good and had a nice smooth rolling nature. However, it did take a couple of runs to break in, no big deal.
The FlyteFoam delivers lightweight but resilient cushioning and is now found in many other Asics models. The GT 2000 6 also features Asics gel pads in the heel and forefoot for additional shock absorption. A layer of SpEVA foam sits on top of the FlyteFoam which adds to the comfort and delivers increased energy return.
Stability is provided via a combination of technologies. Asics’s DuoMax midsole material, a firmer material placed strategically throughout the midsole, slows down the rate of pronation and delivers a smoother transition from the heel to the forefoot. The Impact Guidance System is links elements of the midsole and outsole to enhance the foot’s natural gait, the Guidance Line is the vertical deep channel groove strategically designed to help guide your foot through a more neutral gait and the Trusstic System is a firm plastic plate at the midfoot point which provides torsional rigidity, i.e. it won’t allow the shoe to twist too much. A combination of all make the shoe feel very stable.
The upper is free from gimmicks and is entirely new. Made from an updated seamless mesh, the upper is extremely breathable and comfortable when you first put your foot in to the shoe. The cleaner look has been achieved by removing the overlays of the previous model but we didn’t think would sacrifice support. There are some very nice (and lightweight) overlays in key areas to support high stress sections. The heel area is solid and fits snugly.
The DuraSponge forefoot makes for a comfortable and smooth riding shoe while the usual Asics AHAR rubber will ensure durability. Flex grooves add flexibility in the right areas but nothing new to report here.
Solid, dependable, trustworthy, not flashy, does a good job, offers value… All very boring but what more do you want from a running shoe? It’s a shoe that’s packed full of technology and will look after you mile after mile. Great for those wanting one pair of shoes for all their running needs perhaps. A great shoe for those old hacks like us or for those who are new to running and just starting on their journey. Well made, well cushioned and stable – good job, Asics.
