Do not let the word stability fool you - yes this is a supportive shoe, but it is also cushioned and able to perform to a high level when it comes to pace.

Our verdict

This is a tough shoe, one that'll last the course. It is slightly heavier than most asics shoes, but it offers a really solid blend of cushioning and stability and might be perfect for the heavier runner.

  • A little heavy

First impressions

The Asics GT2000 5 is for the higher mileage runner looking for structured cushioning and support. It features a FluidRide midsole for bounce-back and cushioning. An added stitch-down toecap enhances durability and forefoot support. Take a look at the Nike Zoom Structure 20 as an alternative.

First Impressions? True, it does feel a little heavier than many Asics shoes, but it also promises plenty in terms of cushioning and stabilty. The flexibility is good, the midsole looks more than adequate, which has you interested if you’re a high mileage runner looking for comfort and support.

Midsole

There’s plenty going on under your feet, but in an unobtrusive sort of way. The thing that really stands out is the support provided; there’s a great stable fit around your heel and the shoe does as it promises in turns of controlling pronation. It’s not a solid unforgiving environment, more a cushioned performance world thanks to the FluidRide construction, a midsole that is extremely shock absorbing. An important addition is the fact Asics have put SpEVA on top of its Solyte foam for cushioning that doesn’t just sink under your stride. This works well with Asics Gel which is under the forefoot and heel. Early days suggest the durability is good as is the 10mm heel to toe drop which is a number easy to get on with for just about every runner.

Upper

A comfortable breathable environment that holds your feet in place – as it should in a stability shoe.

Conclusion

There are all sorts of stability shoes out there some more suited to today’s expectations than others; this checks plenty of boxes as a good high mileage, supportive shoe that will last the rounds.

The GT 2000-5 won Best Buy 2017 Runner's World shoe awards.
