A flagship model that offers everything you would expect from a neutral shoe; there is cushioning, but not an overly soft experience, there is support, but just right rather than excessive and more importantly, it is responsive.

Our verdict

Lovely riding cushioned neutral trainer. A seriously good shoe.

First impressions

The Asics Gel Nimbus 19 is a long-distance running shoe that offers plenty of cushioning thanks to the FluidRide 2.0 midsole, FlyteFoam bottom layer midsole and SpEVA top layer midsole, which increases bounce-back characteristics while decreasing midsole breakdown. An alternative is the adidas Supernova Glide Boost.

First Impressions? A good solid feeling shoe that suggests it can cope with all sorts of occasions. Flexible, and much lighter than expected the only question is, how does it ride?

Midsole

Fans of Asics will understand the relevance of rear and forefoot gel cushioning – it’s what Asics is all about. Basically you’ll be treated to a solid feeling but exceptionally cushioned ride. There’s no doubting that all the energy that hits the road is used to propel you along thanks to this technology. Your foot can move through a perfect range of motion throughout the gait cycle. To make things even better in this instance, Asics have managed to drop the shoe’s weight without skimping on any of the essential protection thanks to Asics’ new FlyteFoam Midsole technology that is designed to deliver an adaptive cushioning without adding weight.

Durabilty has also been improved in the 19. Small touches include the Guidance Trusstic System which integrates Guidance Line construction for enhanced gait efficiency while providing midfoot structural integrity. In short, it helps you run smoothly. It sits on a 10mm heel to toe drop.

Upper

The 19 has been updated to provide a sock-like fit with the multi-directional fabric. It’s soft, accommodating, yet stable. There is a little more room in the toe box, but our test team report it still can be a little tight in that area so keep that in mind if you have very wide feet. The fit is fully adaptable thanks to the Discrete Eyelets, which are independently placed eyelets that disburse lace tension, creating a customized fitting environment and enhanced upper comfort.

Conclusion

A performance shoe fully at home on the road whether that means everyday use, long runs or even the marathon. Cushioned, responsive and lightweight; you can’t ask for much more.
