Whilst the options for lighter, softer and more responsive shoes are plentiful (even from ASICS) the DS still performs well and some will seek it out as a reliable and versatile shoe.
The 26th version of this very popular racer-trainer model retains most of the features of the previous shoe with only cosmetic updates. A nice new knitted upper feels great and it's good to see that super-grippy outsole still in place.
The midsole does feature a medial post that may make many think it's a shoe for over-pronators, well, it is, kind-off. It terms of lightweight shoes it's very stable, but that posting is there as much to keep the shoe stable and from being over-flexible in the midfoot. If you need support it's a reasonable option. The cushioning feels capable enough for more regular use and light enough for racer day. BUT, if you are also training in newer, super-shoes with their magic foams, be prepared for a harsh contrast when you jump into these; in those circumstances they feel really quite firm.
Soft, flexible knit upper allows for a natural movement of the foot and is a sock-like fit.
The outsole is a standout feature on this model as always. The combination of rubbers ASICS use on the DS always give it excellent traction. Dry on in the wet, even on moss covered pavements or gravel paths, the DS provides a bite that gives you a real confidence when attacking the bends.
For the many fans of the DS trainer over the years, they'll be happy to find it's still essentially the same shoe. A lightweight trainer with resonable cushioning for regular use but light enough to race in. But in the day and age of super-shoes will it attract new customers?
