For any shoe to reach its 25th incarnation says something about its popularity. We test the latest version.
A great blend of light weight, firmer cushioning and support. It makes the Gel-DS Trainer a very versatile shoe. Lovely to go for a gentle training run in when you don't want the bulk, perfect for faster days and for long races if you're not super-swift.
For any shoe to reach its 25th incarnation says something about its popularity. The DS Trainer is perhaps the original racer/trainer and thankfully, it stays true to the philosophy; light enough for racing, but cushioned enough for training.
If you don't need the stability, the other shoe in the race/trainer category of note is the Asics DynaFlyte 4. Both shoes are great.
The DS is essentially a striped down Kayano or 2000. Lower profile cushioning but retaining the medial post for support. In such a low profile and light shoe that support is less effective at controling over-pronation, but more about keeping such a light shoe stable. Don’t worry, over pronators will be fine in it and it’s a great option for them.
The ride is firm by the standard of many of today’s shoes, but many like that more raw, aggressive feel that really gives a drive off as you pick up the pace.
The upper is extremely breathable. This open mesh engineered weave is also extremely light. Nothing fancy here - the DS upper is all about performance and function. Welded overlays strengthen the lace hole areas and a mix of a tougher plastic and welding strengthens the heel a little.
The outsole is a standout feature on this model. The combination of rubbers ASICS use on the DS always give it excellent traction. Dry on in the wet, even on moss covered pavements or gravel paths, the DS provides a bite that gives you a real confidence when attacking the bends.
The Gel-DS Trainer remains one of the very best lightweight trainers on the market. The added medial support is important for many runners making this for them, a perfect marathon racing shoe or faster paced training shoe.
Flytefoam Lyte provides lightweight and durable cushioning that is also environmentally friendly.
Rearfoot Gel cushioning system uses a silicone-based gel for responsive shock absorption on impact.
Dynamic DuoMax Support System uses a dual-density material in the midfoot to reduce overpronation.
Propulsion Trusstic System utilizes a thermal plastic unit that connects the lateral heel to the medial forefoot. This unit works to release stored energy and propel you forward during toe-off.
Impact Guidance System (IGS) design creates a smooth and balanced heel-to-toe transition.
Guidance Line is a vertical flex groove in the forefoot for improved gait efficiency.
ASICS High Abrasion Rubber (AHAR) in the heel is made of carbon rubber for exceptional durability.
Performance Knit upper offers lightweight comfort and breathability.
