A good update to the model, it's softer, smoother riding and more flexible, particulalryl in the forefoot. It feels like a new model rather than an update such are the improvements.
If you've had these shoes before you should love this update. There are all-round improvements in fit and feel as well as performance. The 22 is now good enough even to be competitive against it's own premium model, the Nimbus.
When you first pull the shoe on it feels so much lighter than previous versions (its actually just 20g lighter) the improved upper fit helps with this as well as the increased flexibility.
It's a little softer, smoother riding and more flexible, all things which contribute to the improvements.
FLYTEFOAM used in the midsole gives this version a softer, more pillow-like ride. Gel is visable in the heel area, but with advances in foam based materials it could soon disappear from shoes, such have been the advances in recent years.
A new, one piece upper fits great. It feels thinner and less bulky than before and it gives the shoe a more premium feel.
It retains a familar enough feel so you recognise it as an ASICS, good build quality and durability and there's no issues with breathability. We tested this during some hot weather (for the UK) and it handled the heat well.
The sole plays a major part in the performance of this new model. More grooves and pieces to make up the forefoot in particular mean it's much more flexible and feels much better fore it. These added grooves give a smoother ride, help balance the foot better and improve toe-off.
A good combination of midsole cushioning and construction (grooved, flexible outsole) combine to make this shoe a great update. It simply sits in a slightly awkward position for ASICS. The Nimbus is their flagship model (and much more expensive) and as such recieves a lot of attention. The shoe deserves to be more widely considered as a serious contender in this sector and future updates could easily make it a go to model.
