First impressions

The Altra Torin 3.0 is a neutral cushioned shoe from the zero-drop company. Altra design shoes to encourage a more natural stride. The Torin 3.0 rides at a height of 28mm but with a zero drop so that the cushioning is at the same height at the heel as it is at the forefoot – got it?!

The Torin has traditionally been Altra’s best-selling shoe so the next in the line, the 3.0, has a lot to live up to. That said, the previous models of the Torin have been a little hit and miss. Those who have liked the previous model, the 2.5 version, will love this new 3.0 model.

This model looks good. The upper has been reworked to provide better breathability. They’re unusual in that they’re made of a textured mesh (not sure why) that is quick-drying.

They certainly felt good on. There are bags of room in the toe box but the shoe felt snug on the foot. Although it looks a little brick like (due to the shape more than anything), it’s far from being a hefty shoe. The 28mm ride height is fairly chunky but the shoe was light and thanks to its midsole / outsole combo, very flexible.

The ride is great – soft but not too soft. The ride is plush; soft but smooth. You’ll love cruising around your daily runs in these.

The other thing to mention is that weight. They really are versatile because of it and this means that they would be light enough for pacier runs and for racing in. Happy days if you want a one-stop shop.

Midsole

The midsole unit hasn’t changed from the previous model but that’s just fine. The dual layer EVA & A-Bound cushioning is light, soft and responsive. It features a series of inner flex grooves to aid flexibility which is a good thing given the midsole height. A denser material might mean that the shoe be inflexible but the A-Bound coupled with the flex grooves offers a nice combination.

Upper

The upper has been revamped in a good-looking quick-dry mesh upper. They certainly performed well on the runs keeping my feet cool throughout. The shoe features a well-padded heel that really locked down the heel and the general fit of the shoe was good throughout the midfoot. Altra are known for that toe box and there was plenty of room to splay my toes out. That said, the depth of the toe box wasn’t very high and seemed shallower than previous models.

The shoe features a removable 6mm footbed which was comfortable enough and offers you the opportunity to remove it if you wear orthotics.

Colourways I felt are also good.

Sole

The outsole has been reworked and improved. The new FootPod has been designed to better follow the natural construction of the human foot. We’ll take your word for it, Altra! It is designed to bend and flex mimicking the areas of your foot that bend and flex. We just know that they felt great and worked fine.

Conclusion

We think the Torin 3.0 is bang on the money. Fans of Altra and of neutral, natural running shoes are going to really like it. Soft, smooth, flexible and versatile. Worthy of serious consideration.
