The Altra One v3 is a good shoe for faster paced running and racing for the zero-drop fans. It's well made, comfortable and offers great value for money.
The One v3 is Altra’s racing shoe. Riding at a height of 18mm throughout the length of the shoe (zero drop brand remember) the shoe is not only designed for race day but also quicker workouts.
We liked the shoe’s design. The upper is made of a tight breathable mesh but when you look closely, it is covered with an overlay wrap. It starts from one side of the heel counter, runs along one side, around the toe box area and down the other also joining around across the top of the foot bridge area. The overlays will add strength and ensure form throughout the upper so stretching would seem virtually impossible with this upper.
As you’d expect, the Altra One v3 have bags of room in the toebox area which is Altra’s USP. This will allow the toes to work ‘properly’, unhindered by skinnier toe boxes. Like other Altra’s the shoe is foot-shaped so to promote better foot mechanics and allow for a better foot movement – in other words, allow your feet to work as they were designed to do.
The heel counter is weak but then again, this is a racing shoe so stripped of any weight bearing additions.
On foot, they are comfortable. The tongue is stitched down one side only which seemed a little weird; I guess to stop any slipping sideways so not a bad idea. The tongue is very thin but you couldn’t feel the flat laces digging in at all when laced fairly tightly. That said, I am a fan of wearing no socks with racing shoes and I could feel the stitching and it was uncomfortable. You’ll have no such issues if wearing socks though.
They felt soft underfoot and offered a very nice ride for the midfoot to forefoot striker. My main issue with the shoe is that it wasn’t that light for a racing flat. I think if you’re an Altra fan, you’ll really enjoy faster training runs in these, they really offered a smooth ride, but if you’re a faster paced runner you might want something a little lighter than the One’s. Most of us, however, aren’t going to set the world alight with our race times and they were plenty light enough for a 10k upwards shoe.
A dual compound EVA material offered a smooth-rolling feel to the durable yet soft midsole. There are flex grooves cut throughout this midsole to that create this transitional feeling. It’s fairly low-tech but works ok.
The upper mesh is quick drying, light and breathable. It features a fairly standard lacing system that worked well. There is a nice amount of padding around the heel collar so they felt comfortable.
If new to Altra, the last takes some getting used to. There is so much room in the forefoot, that your initial thought is that they are loose but the midfoot and heel areas fit well enough, it’s just unusual to have so much room in the toe box area – but that’s what Altra and the foot-shaped zero drop technology is all about, right?!
The flex groove layout creates a large waffle outsole design. This FootPod outsole was flexible and responsive. Grip was good even on wet pavement.
The outsole is blown rubber which feels great underfoot. The only issue with it is that it isn’t as hard wearing as other materials. That said, it’s lighter than most and this is, after all, a racing shoe, not a high-mileage trainer.
If you’re a fan of Altra then this is the longer distance racing shoe for you and it offers great value for money. You’d certainly be able to train in this shoe as it would be perfect for tempo running so it offers you versatility and a great bang for your buck. It is a fairly basic shoe but it worked well; it was comfortable and rode smoothly. We just with it was a little lighter, but as stated before, it’s light enough for most of us for sure and ideally suited to longer races. If you want a faster feeling shoe, look to the Altra Vanish-R.
