Our verdict

Whilst the Boost remains a reasonable shoe, it's disappointing that it really hasn't moved on at all in it's execution since it's launch. You could be forgiven for thinking it's the same shoe as ten years ago. Without any new development it needs to come down in price to offer better value.

  • Positive
  • Responsive cushioning
  • Good traction from Continental rubber outsole
  • Negative
  • Cushioning can bottom out
  • Expensive
  • Tight fit

First impressions

With a slightly redesigned heel counter and new colours, that is the extent of the first impressions of the shoe. It remains the same as always. It has its fans but could its days be nuumbered as brands now all have their own answer to the TPU midsole material.

The Ultra Boost sits at the top of the neutral cushion offering alongside the Ultra Boost PB and above the Solar Drive model.

Midsole

The first of the super-foams, Boost has a soft and springy feel. It can be a little unstable in the heel for over-pronators - so be warned. The toe-off is energetic but for heavier runners the midsole seems to bottom out quickly under the ball of the foot.

Upper

A knitted upper is close and sock-like. It stretches around the foot very well and feels very supportive. For some it's a little too close a fit. It's well made and looks good. Watch out for that heel counter and tab. Whilst it's soft it does turn in somewhat and some testers felt it aggrivated their Achilles.

Sole

Continental rubber is fantastic and used here, it provides fantastic grip on roads and pavements regardless of the weather conditions. It's durable too.

Conclusion

It's a C grade this term - the shoe is ok, but at this price you can have pretty much any training shoe from any brand and now the alternatives have caught up to the responsive feel of the Boost.
